My 91 year old Grandmother Remembers Segregation
I gave my grandmother a personal tour to of the Dignity Museum
Last Sunday, just eight days after my grandmother celebrated her 91st birthday, I was given a remarkable opportunity to take her on a personal tour of the Dignity Museum1—a project created by Love Beyond Walls. Words cannot express the depth of emotion I experienced during this visit.
The moment’s significance was not lost on me, as my grandmother shared stories from her upbringing in the 1930s, recounting the limitations she faced as a black person.
It saddened me to hear how she was denied access to certain establishments and even simple pleasures like visiting museums like the one I created with Love Beyond Walls.
I invite you to watch the video below to glimpse this unforgettable experience. Why? Because my grandmother became the oldest person to ever visit the museum and my first family member to date. It has become a cherished memory that I will carry with me always.
As the tour drew close, my grandmother imparted words of wisdom that will forever resonate with me: “Keep going...”
I am immensely grateful to Jessica Lester, affectionately known as “Grannie,” for speaking into my life when I was a child and now as I continue to advocate for those experiencing poverty.
My grandmother and grandparents have become the most significant source of inspiration for my forthcoming book, “All God’s Children.”
Their lives and sacrifice are a massive part of who I have become.
Stay tuned for more updates on my book and the extraordinary individuals who have shaped my life. Also, Consider preordering “All God’s Children.”
Dignity Museum is the first museum in the U.S. that advocates on behalf of those who are unhoused.
